Alex Pereira teases a potential return to the middleweight division .
The lightweight champion who has taken the UFC by storm is preparing to face Khalil Rountree.
Pereira who was once a middleweight champion moved up to avoid the drastic weight cut.
Could Alex Pereira Return Alex Pereira
Alex Pereira initially started his UFC career in the middleweight division. The Brazilian who is well renowned for his kickboxing ability was fast tracked to a title shot after several dominant wins. Furthermore, it was highly known that Alex Pereira had already beat then champion Israel Adesanya.
Writing on his Instagram, Alex Pereira said; “I’m focused on my next fight and I’m going prepared. You never know what can happen. So regardless of the result I want to go down one more time to the middleweight and go for the belt.”
“Hey Dricus, bring your will to fight me so you can prove that you are better than me, with your public statement it is easy to make this happen, Chama”
As this unfolded on social media late last evening middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis clapped back at Alex Pereira. The South African said: “Alex Pereira, you and you boyfriend Sean Strickland can have a domestic dispute on who gets slept first.”
What Could Happen
This all depends on the UFC and in particular Dana White who was asked about a potential matchup between the pair. White went on to say; “My take on him is ‘He’s f****** nasty’ – that’s my take on him.”
He wants to move up, he wants to move down, he wants to do everything. That’s why people love him. Those are the type of fighters that people love so you know. Pereira wants to fight everybody, and I love it.”
“The thing that’s great about this is that it gives us a tonne of options that as we’re in matchmaking. ‘Should we do this, should we do that, shouldn’t we do this, shouldn’t we do that’. It’s a good problem to have with a guy like him.”
Given how dominant Alex Pereira has been since his UFC debut it shouldn’t be much of a surprise if he transitions back to middleweight. For both Pereira and Dricus Du Plessis it is a legacy fight and a dream matchup for fight fans. Whilst the Brazilian has long touted a return back to the division he first dominated in the UFC, nothing has ever materialised. However, with both fighters seemingly eager to fight the UFC could book the fight.
Could we see Alex Pereira and Dricus Du Plessis fight in the near future?
