Former Swedish UFC Light Heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson has shared his strong opinions about the upcoming UFC 304 event, where he’s placing his bets on Tom Aspinall to not only overcome Curtis Blaydes but also to challenge and possibly defeat UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.
In an exclusive interview with Top Offshore Casinos, Gustafsson expressed his confidence in Aspinall’s current form. He believes Aspinall is in a league of his own at the moment.
“Aspinall is on fire right now and he is a very, very good heavyweight. I don’t see anyone beating Aspinall right now,” Gustafsson said.
He further elaborated on Aspinall’s potential match against Jones, saying, “I understand why Tom wants to fight Jon. It’s because Jon is the GOAT, the biggest UFC star right now. If Tom was to beat Jon, it would be bigger than winning any UFC belt. The biggest achievement in the UFC right now is to beat Jon Jones. I understand why Aspinall is chasing the fight. I think he is ready for Jon.”
Alexander Gustafsson Believes Tom Aspinall Would Be Too Much for UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones
According to Gustafsson, now is the perfect time for Aspinall to face Jones:
“Yes, I think Tom will be too much for Jon. He has all the weapons to beat Jon. Jon hasn’t been that active, but he’s still the GOAT. You can never count this guy out. He’s handled every opponent and everybody knows how good he is, but Aspinall right now, I see him as very dangerous for Jon. He’s dangerous on his feet, he’s fast, he has great footwork, and he’s a smart fighter. He has the tools to do well against Jon and even beat him.”
Aside from discussing Aspinall, Gustafsson also touched on the early start time for UFC 304, which is set for 4 AM UK time. He has some words of encouragement for both Tom Aspinall and Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards:
The UFC 304 Start Time
“Everyone reacts differently to fighting in the early hours of the morning,” he noted. “I did the last part of my camp during those hours. I’d have a session early in the evening and then another early in the morning. Your body and mind get used to it. It was a bit of a struggle at first, but you adapt.”
Gustafsson reminisced about his own experience fighting in Sweden at an early hour:
“When I stepped in, I didn’t think about it at all. It was a crazy atmosphere. It was fully packed at 4 o’clock in the morning. It was one of the biggest stages in Sweden. It was an unreal experience. People were on fire, they were crazy, it was special.”
Advice?
His advice for Aspinall and Edwards?
“My short advice is not to analyse it too much. It is what it is. Just make the best of it and act like you’re working out at the regular time.”
Lastly, Gustafsson shared his thoughts on a potential match between Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones:
“It’s hard to see Stipe beating Jones. I like Stipe a lot, he’s a great heavyweight, but it’s hard to see him beating Jones. Stipe has done more than most heavyweights in the division, but I have a hard time seeing Stipe beat Jones.”
As UFC 304 approaches, all eyes will be on Aspinall, Edwards, and how they handle the unique challenges of this fight card.
