Alexander Gustafsson admits he’s no longer on the level of UFC athletes
The UFC legend recently stated that he doesn’t feel UFC level anymore. Alexander Gustafsson has recently signed with the GFL (Global Fight League) a new organisation. Despite not seeing Gustafsson on the main stage anymore, we will see him compete again. After a recent interview with Gustafsson had this to say:
“The UFC is the A-game. The best athletes in the world are competing there. If you don’t have it really anymore, you shouldn’t really be fighting there. So, I feel that I’ve done my part in the organisation .“
“I look back at my career in the UFC with a lot of pride and a lot of honor, and just to be able to fight for them for so long. I’ve always seen myself as a UFC fighter.”
”I feel like I’m not in my top game anymore.”
”We also have the GFL contract on the table, too. I have some other offers, too. I feel like I’m not going to do this for a very long time, so let’s make the best of it, and squeeze it out as much as possible. Then I’m done.
Gustafsson’s had a long career in the UFC after debuting in 2009. Since then he’s faced off with the division’s toughest, defeating Glover Teixeira, Jan Blachowicz and giving Jon Jones a challenge.
The Mauler’s past
Gustafsson has had a tough last few fights in the UFC after going on a 4 fight loss streak since 2018. The athlete is now 38 and after coming off a KO loss to Krylov in London he looks to be showing his age in the octagon. Many fans consider the Swedish athlete to be one of, if not the greatest athlete to never win the belt. Gustafsson will undoubtedly be in the UFC hall of fame, his fight at UFC 165 has already been inducted as a fight in the hall of fame.
The GFL
The new organization GFL has blown up over the past few months after apparently signing many ex-UFC fighters and veterans. After a questionable fighter draft event with AI introductions we saw many familiar faces appear in the organization including Gustafsson. With many returning faces to the organization fans may get to see matchups that they thought were destined never to happen. The roster may allow for more aged fighters to pick up a few more professional wins before retirement. This is what ‘The Mauler’ plans to do before hanging up the gloves.
