Former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is open to a rematch with Ilia Topuria, but can acknowledge the difficulties surrounding it.
When Alexander Volkanovski lost his belt to Ilia Topuria, he had been the king of the featherweight division since 2019. Topuria’s stunning knockout of Max Holloway at UFC 308 meant he was put next in line for a title shot.
This was soon confirmed by UFC CEO Dana White, who declared a rematch between Volkanovski and Topuria would be the utmost priority at featherweight.

Monday’s episode of The Ariel Helwani Show featured the former champion, who detailed the problems in arranging a rematch with the ‘El Matador’.
“It’s still early, but it’s gonna be tough to get him over to Sydney. I always knew that. That’s why I was saying that I’d prefer Max winning just purely for that, but at least I know I’m guaranteed next [in line]. Maybe it’ll be Madrid in a stadium or something. That sounds great. I’ll fight in enemy territory.”
A homecoming fight in Spain would be something of a dream for the Georgian, who has lived in the country since 2015.
The prospect of entering enemy territory is very much something Volkanvoski embraces, although he does not believe he’ll be playing the villain.
Playing the Villian in Madrid
“I don’t think I’m the enemy anywhere in the world, but obviously he’s going to have a massive crowd. I’ve fought in enemy territories many times. Been booed plenty of times.”
“Imagine a massive event in Spain. It’s just when is it. Is that later in 2025 where I’m waiting like two years before I fight? I’m not getting any younger, everyone knows that. I’ve got one last crack at this title and I’m gonna put everything into it so hopefully early next year we can make it happen.”
Volkanovski is currently 36 years old, with his birthday in September. His last bout was against Topuria back i
n February – only 4 months after being head-kick KOd by Islam Makhachev.
Whenever the fight happens, it is likely the sooner the better for Volkanvoski. The former champion is nearing a year long layoff – something totally uncharacteristic for him.
‘The Great’ will be chomping at the bit to get back in the Octagon whenever the title opportunity arises.
