Alexander Volkanovski, fresh from his stoppage of Yair Rodriguez calls on current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling to come for him.
After another impressive win at UFC 290 against Yair Rodriguez, the pound-for-pound #1 is looking at a number of options for his next fight. He’s calling on the current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling to make good on his previous statements to move up a division.
Alexander ‘The Great’ had another brilliant performance against a dangerous Yair Rodriguez last Saturday. The Australian took control of the grappling in the early rounds before hurting Yair in the 3rd, taking him down and finishing the fight on the ground. This is now Volks fifth title defence and he’s already looking to who’s next.
Alexander Volkanovski Wants Sterling to Come for the Challenge.
Speaking on his YouTube channel on Monday Volk said: “Aljo’s (Aljamain Sterling) in a position where if he gets – how many defenses that’ll be, that’ll be four or five – four defenses I think – if he was to take out Sean O’Malley – and I think that’d be great for his career, that’s definitely another one.”
The champ continued “I think – as I’ve already said, if he does that, he’s paid his dues,” Alexander Volkanovski explained. “He deserves it. So I’ll definitely welcome him to the featherweight [division]. I think he doesn’t need to go through anyone. I think he can go straight to me and let’s see if he takes the loss and stays at 145 (pounds) or takes the loss and tries to go back down to bantamweight.” (Transcribed by MMA News)
Sterling, however, does have business of his own to take care of. He takes on the hugely popular Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 in August. Sterling has suggested he’ll move up after this fight so a fight with Alexander Volkanovski could become a reality.
At the moment, the fight looks very exciting. What are your thoughts? How do you think a fight between Volk and Aljo would go? let us know in the comments.
