Alexander Volkanovski, the former UFC featherweight champion, has expressed his readiness to step in if needed for the welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad.
Edwards and Muhammad are scheduled to face off in the main event of UFC 304, which promises to be a thrilling card in Manchester. For Edwards, this bout will mark his return after a decisive win over Colby Covington in December. Muhammad, on the other hand, will be making his comeback following a victory over Gilbert Burns last summer.
Should any issues arise with Edwards or Muhammad, Volkanovski is prepared to jump in on short notice. In a recent conversation with The Mac Life, Volkanovski made it clear that he’s open to the idea of stepping into the welterweight title bout.
Volkanovski shared that he wasn’t anticipating a fight this weekend but is willing to take on the challenge if it comes up. He noted that a match against Belal Muhammad could be particularly intriguing. Volkanovski acknowledged that Muhammad might take his comments the wrong way, but he believes a fight with him could be quite competitive.
Alexander Volkanovski Offers to Step in at UFC 304 Main Event
“Believe it or not, I would do it,” Volkanovski said about potentially fighting in the UFC 304 main event. “I would do it, that would be a good paycheck for that one. We’re actually good mates with Leon, but if you’ve got to save the day, you’ve got to save the day. He’s a great fighter, so that would be a tough fight.”
He continued, “This is not disrespectful, but stylistically, Belal [would be better]. He’s going to be offended by that, but no. I’m not trying to offend you, but that’s a fight I could do. Leon Edwards, obviously I believe in myself all the time, but he’s good. He’s very threatening in so many areas. Not to say Belal’s not, but obviously, he’s more strategy… But, that stuff, you need more than that to [beat me].”
Although Volkanovski primarily fights at 145 pounds, he has competed in the welterweight division in the past. He began his career fighting at 170 pounds, where he had a solid record of 4-1.
