Alexandre Pantoja Edges Close Fight vs. Steve Erceg at UFC 301
The reigning flyweight champion, Alexandre Pantoja, enters the octagon with a record of 27-5. Known for his comprehensive skill set, Pantoja has essentially cleared out the flyweight division. Having secured the championship with impressive victories, including a notable win over Brandon Moreno, Pantoja aims to defend his title for the second time in front of his home crowd.
Steve Erceg
Challenger Steve Erceg, hailing from Australia, holds an impressive record of 12-1. Despite his relatively recent entry into the UFC, Erceg has quickly risen through the rankings, displaying a well-rounded fighting style that combines impressive striking and strong grappling skills. His most recent victory came by a knockout against Matt Schnell, highlighting his capability to end the fight and proving he has knockout power.
Fight Analysis
This title fight presents an important matchup in the flyweight division, with Pantoja’s experience and proven track record against Erceg’s rapid ascent and versatility. Erceg will need to use his striking and keep the fight on his terms to overcome the champion’s more seasoned game. Pantoja, on the other hand, will look to exploit his grappling advantage and experience fighting top-tier opponents to maintain control and retain his title.
Alexandre Pantoja retains his world championship belt in a highly contested fight. The first 2 rounds saw Pantoja and Erceg exchanging blows on the feet. However, Pantoja was also able to mix in his grappling utilising control and landing some ground and pound. This edged Pantoja the first 2 rounds. Rounds 3 and 4 saw Erceg have more success on the feet as he managed to stop takedowns. Erceg was able to cut Pantoja with elbows which he utilised nicely throughout the fight. Erceg managed to cause the more visble damage and landed the more effective strikes securing those rounds.
Then, Round 5 the deciding round took place. This round saw Erceg have decent success on the feet however Erceg made the bizarre choice to shoot takedowns. This choice cost him as multiple times he was reversed in scrambles. Pantoja after the takedown attempts was able to keep Erceg down for long periods of time. Pantoja’s grappling and Erceg’s mistake to engage with it cost him the fight. Pantoja was awarded the unamious decision 48-47 across the board.
Erceg’s performance was excellent however his experience cost him the fight as Pantoja escaped with a narrow decision.
