UFC 292 saw ex-bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling drop his belt to ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley via devastating TKO.
How The Fight Played Out
Sterling and O’Malley shared an even round one where neither committed to any real offence. O’Malley would claim in the post-fight press conference that he “dominated that first round. He didn’t touch me.” All three judges gave Aljamain the first round unanimously.
The second round would play out very differently. All of O’Malley’s feints and reads from the first round would play a pivotal part in encouraging Sterling to over-extend and leave himself open to a right overhand which dropped ‘Funkmaster’ before O’Malley would find the stoppage by pouncing on the ground and pound.
Official result: Sean O’Malley Def. Aljamain Sterling via TKO (Overhand followed by GnP) at 00:51 Round 2.
Post-Fight
Former champion Aljamain Sterling would also get an opportunity to talk to Joe Rogan where he would give a candid assessment of how the fight played out and his ambitions to move up in weight class given how badly O’Malley just caught him.
O’Malley would be interviewed in the octagon post-fight and announce that “this is just the beginning of the ‘Suga’ era. I’m running this s*** ’til 2035 baby!”
Sterling since then has taken to ‘X’, formerly named Twitter, to claim “I’m more than alright. Everything I need is here!” Aljamain attached a picture of himself surrounded by his team and fiancée and another of just him and his fiancée, Rebecca Cruz.
In the post-fight press conference, Aljamian Sterling choked up while describing how far he’d come in life. He would describe how “set in terms of financial means” he is thanks to the UFC and explained how he’d been able to buy his mum a house and own three houses himself. Sterling would proclaim “I’m super proud of everything I’ve done, no one could, like, I’m bulletproof man, like no one could shake me mentally, no one but myself.”
