Andy Ruiz Jr has revealed that Anthony Joshua sent him direct messages on Instagram after the rematch in 2019.
Ruiz Jr shocked the world by defeating Joshua via seventh-round TKO to WBA, IBF and the WBO titles.
However, the Englishman would go on to win the rematch via decision back in December of 2019. Following the defeat, Ruiz Jr took some time away from the sport.
Ruiz Jr said that he struggled with depression following the defeat to Joshua and went to 320lbs in weight. During that period, Ruiz Jr revealed that he received messages of support from Joshua.
Andy Ruiz Jr Is Now Looking To Get Back to the Top of the Sport
Speaking to the Mail, Ruiz Jr said: “I just wanted to crawl under my bed and just hide and eat Cheerios.
“There were a few messages.
“We were just saying that I’d bounce back, that I’m a great fighter.
“I have nothing but love for him. I don’t have no grudges.”
Eventually, he returned in May of 2021 and defeated Chris Arreola via decision.
After another year-long layoff, Ruiz Jr is set to return to the ring in September against Luis Ortiz.
Should Ruiz Jr get the job done against Ortiz, it is fair to say that a few doors will open.
At 32 years of age, the Mexican-American will be desperate to get back to the top of the heavyweight division.
A win over Ortiz in September will certainly help his chances.
With the likes of Oleksandr Usyk, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder fighting this year, there are plenty of opportunities for Ruiz Jr.
It is never easy for a fighter to lose on the biggest stage. However, Ruiz Jr is determined to get the belts back.
As of right now, it is just a case of one step at a time. For the Mexican-American, the big heavyweight showdowns will come in the very near future.
