Alex Pereira might now be regretting the offer he gave to Anthony Smith earlier in the week. Alex Pereira offered Anthony Smith $50,000 of his own money after he earned an incredible upset victory at UFC 301.
Anthony Smith Accepts 50K Bet From Alex Pereira
The UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira and former light heavyweight title contender Anthony Smith have been going back and forth on social media for several months. However, now Alex Pereira and Anthony Smith are talking about putting money on the line.
Earlier in the week building up to UFC 301 Alex Pereira appeared on an episode of Connect Cast. During this appearance, he made a unique offer to Anthony Smith with an incredible reward which would be coming out of Pereia’s pocket. Alex Pereira gave Smith the offer when he said;
“I make a bet with Anthony Smith. I let him take my back with hooks in and give him five minutes to finish me. We can bet. He said I’d win a $50k bonus, he said it was a sure thing. So, if he sees me saying this here, I want him to accept.”
Alex Pereira then went on to explain that if Smith can submit him then he would give Smith $50,000. However, if Smith isn’t able to submit him and he can get back to his feet then it would be Smith that would have to pay him $50,000.
“So, here we go, I’ll have five minutes to get up and stand. If I get up in one minute or four minutes, don’t matter, I stood up, he pays $50k. If he finishes me, okay.”
Smith Has Responded
Anthony Smith has since responded to Pereira’s challenge. This happened when Smith was speaking at his post-fight press conference after Smith was able to get the upset victory. Anthony Smith was facing Vitor Petrino who was an undefeated prospect with 11 victories 7 from knockout and 1 submission. Smith was able to get the victory in the first round when he caught Petrino in a guillotine choke. After the victory, Anthony Smith accepted Pereira’s challenge when he said;
“What did he say – Alex Pereira said that he would put up $50K but I can start on his back, hooks in and I got five minutes to finish him, and he’ll put up $50K for it… I’ll take his $50K.”
Smith is a fan-favourite and he has sent a stark warning to the current light heavyweight champion. This warning was giving Pereira a precursor to what would happen if he got his shot at facing the light heavyweight champion.
“I’ll take his money, if I start on his back then I’ll choke the s*** out of him, 100%.”
Before Smith went out there and got the upset victory at UFC 301 he was able to speak to GiveMeSport. Anthony Smith spoke about how defeating such a living legend as Alex Pereira in the octagon would give him the excuse to stick around for another shot of the belt.
“That’d be sweet, huh? That’d be sweet, wouldn’t it? That’d be fun. It’s possible too. It’s so funny, everyone’s always like, ‘Oh, Alex will beat the s*** out of you’, maybe. But the flip of that is that he might f****** not. He might not. And honestly, I think that’s why I bother him.”
It will not be an easy task however, we wait to see if he gets the chance.
