Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith reflected on his important UFC 301 victory over Vitor Petrino.
Smith who had lost his last fight against Khalil Rowntree Junior needed this win to extend his UFC stay.
Anthony Smith spoke about how the prefight preparations were key to his victory on the weekend.
Anthony Smith Digests UFC 301 Performance
Speaking on the Believe You Me podcast with Michael Bisping Anthony Smith said: “I probably had the best fight week I ever had I don’t know why.”
“It was different I was hyper focused, having a full training camp and I didn’t leave any stones unturned.”
“I trained my ass off during UFC 300 week and I did the extra little things and it paid off.”
“It was a really good week my weight cut was easy, I only did three sits in the bath and I was on weight at seven on Thursday.”
“There was no stress and I was ready to go. I felt really good”
Sparring with fellow fighters in Waldo Cortes-Costa and Xavier Torres were also one of the reasons why Smith was so confident ahead of his fight.
Bisping Reveals His Pre Fight Concerns
Michael Bisping also revealed how worried he was for Anthony Smith because of how dangerous of an opponent Vitor Petrino was.
Bisping went on to say; “You (Smith) needed the win that’s one thing you’ll agree on.”
“Petrino came out guns blazing, no showing you any respect, you were calm and chilled.”
“Anthony you waited for the right opportunity and took full advantage.”
“You were in a tough situation and maybe in hindsight shouldn’t have taken the Khalil Rountree fight.”
“I was worried because firstly you are my friend and secondly Petrino was a dangerous opponent.”
What’s Next?
The American who has struggled with a string of losses was a heavy underdog on the weekend.
Smith who is 10th in the lightweight division is keen to extend his momentum.
Anthony Smith also highlighted how making many small changes were absolutely crucial in his fight.
Lionheart who has dropped down to 10th in the rankings, could make one more title attempt before the end of his UFC career.
