After overcoming his toughest test to date in Calvin Kattar, Arnold Allen is ready to fight for UFC gold after winning ten consecutive fights since joining the UFC in 2015.
With current featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski occupied with the task of challenging for the lightweight title against Islam Makhachev, Allen is aware his opportunity might be in the form of an interim title.
Ipswich’s own Allen surprised numerous doubters after leaving the Apex with his first main event win over Kattar. The 28-year-old bagged a second-round TKO win over the talented striker after he suffered a knee injury which marked the beginning of the end.
Allen has now attained two huge scalps in his last two outings, having defeated Dan Hooker connivingly in the first round in London back in May.
Arnold Allen Wants in Interim Title Conversation
In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour following his victory, Allen stated he wants to be involved in the interim title conversation if that is the UFC’s route. However, Josh Emmet and Yair Rodriguez are also waiting in the wings.
“If they (the UFC) are going to do an interim title [at featherweight], I want to be part of that,” Arnold Allen told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I feel like I should be one half of that. All the talk seems to be that, right [the introduction of an interim title at featherweight]. Everything seems to be pointing to that is happening.”
It’s a tricky situation for UFC matchmakers and Dana White to work out with Allen, Rodriguez, and Emmett all, respectively, having a claim to compete for interim gold.
Emmet, in his most recent outing, edged a close split decision in the main event headliner over Kattar, which brought him to five consecutive wins over credible opposition.
Rodriguez returned to the win column in July with a first-round TKO win over Brian Ortega after the former title challenger suffered a nasty shoulder injury.
