Fabian Edwards addressed media on his brother’s layoff before a fight of his own on September 23. Edwards hunts for gold at Bellator 299 in Dublin’s 3arena.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Fabian told them that Leon Edwards is ready to go, and it is just a contractual matter. According to Dana White, his next opponent will be Colby Covington, much to the chagrin of other welterweights.
Fabian Edwards Updates Media on Leon’s Progress
According to Fabian Edwards, Leon has been training and is healthy, but has not been on the same page with the UFC. This does not bode well for the future of the welterweight division, one that has been plagued by inactivity and injuries.
The Birmingham-based flyweight is close with his brother Leon, and the two have relied on each other coming up to their respective fights.
“Fans keep asking but he’s ready to go, he’s ready to get in there it’s just about the negotiations,” Fabian told The Daily Star . “It’s about location and so many things. At the moment the focus is on me ,and I’m in the cage but he’s training and ready. It’s great having him there if we need to lean on each other, having a champion that’s been there and done it.”
The top ten fighters at 170 pounds have not been busy as of late. Number two-ranked Colby Covington, the man Dana White thinks is next at his bid for gold, has not fought in a year and a half. No top-five ranked fighters have fought in the last six months other than Belal Muhammad.
Number five-ranked Gilbert Burns is out with an injury, Khamzat Chimaev has not fought at welterweight since April 2022, and Kamaru Usman is coming off a sceond consecutive loss to Leon Edwards. As such, the welterweight division has come to a standstill.
Leon Edwards’ next fight is likely to get the division going, and a talented weight class will bring a lot of exciting fights in the years to come.
