The heavyweight division in the UFC is buzzing with confusion and excitement. With two championships in play, fans are left wondering what’s next. Recently, former welterweight fighter Ben Askren has added his voice to the mix, expressing frustration over Jon Jones’ prolonged absence from the Octagon.
Jon Jones, who became the heavyweight champion last March, has been side-lined since then. He won the vacant title by submitting Ciryl Gane with a guillotine choke in the first round. However, a pectoral tendon injury has kept him out of action.
Ben Askren Believes Jon Jones Has Dirt on UFC CEO Dana White
Jones was initially expected to return later this year, specifically at UFC 309 in November at Madison Square Garden. The plan was for him to face Stipe Miocic, a former two-time champion. However, the situation is more complicated with an interim championship currently being defended.
Tom Aspinall, the holder of the interim title, recently defended his belt with a stunning knockout of Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in Manchester. His performance put him in a strong position to challenge for the undisputed title. Yet, UFC President Dana White’s comments have left many puzzled.
White told Aspinall that he “doesn’t deserve anything” in his next fight, despite his impressive record and ongoing pursuit of a unification bout. This has led to considerable debate among fans and analysts.
Ben Askren has voiced his opinion on this tangled situation. On Daniel Cormier’s YouTube channel, Askren questioned whether Jones might have some leverage over White:
“I almost feel like maybe Jon (Jones) has some dirt on Dana (White) or something,” Askren remarked. “Because Dana wouldn’t put up with this type of behaviour. This is what the UFC has been founded on, whereas boxing [is not].”
Askren’s comments reflect growing frustration with the delays and decisions affecting the heavyweight division. Fans are eager to see the unification of the titles and the return of Jon Jones. With the ongoing uncertainty, it remains to be seen how the UFC will navigate these complex issues.
In the meantime, the heavyweight division continues to be a hot topic in combat sports, with many questions still unanswered.
