Amateur MMA fighter Ben Masterton is excited to showcase his improvements and throw down with “no-nonsense” Toby Heaney.
The pair are scheduled to compete at British Fighting Championship 4 later this month, in a clash that will provide action-packed entertainment. Middlesborough will play host to the fight card, and if you’re in the area, you’d be silly not to head along.
Ben Masterton, who hails from Goliath MMA, will head to England with four of his teammates including Davidi Winiarski, and the army will be hopeful of heading back to Scotland with a clean sweep.
Prior to fight night, we had the chance to catch up with Masterton. Hear what he had to say below.
Interview With Ben Masterton
Ben, it is not long until you make the walk for the second time this year. How are you feeling after your most recent outing?
My fight earlier in the year didn’t go my way; mistakes were made, and I’ve adjusted my training and my fight plan accordingly.
You were handed your first loss in your last fight at Machine MMA. Having watched that back, were you able to pinpoint what went wrong on the night, and how have you corrected that ahead of BFC 4?
Yeah, after my loss, I watched the fight back, and I was able to see what went wrong. As stated before, I’ve made adjustments to my game, and now I feel like a more rounded and completely improved fighter.
Two fights under your belt now, 1-1. What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned from those fights?
The biggest lessons I’ve learned from my fights are that there’s no room for mistakes, any slight opening gets exploited, and you have to adjust accordingly on the fly. I’ve also learned that sticking to the game plan is key.
Goliath MMA is a stacked mat filled with many Scottish up-and-comers. What’s it been like to train and prepare in that environment?
Training at Goliath is amazing. You can’t get a better group of guys to train with. We’re always pushing each other to do better and improve. The atmosphere is electric, especially when leading up to a fight show.
Ben Masterton on Team Morale
You won’t be alone in travelling down to Middlesborough and representing Goliath MMA. Just touch on the mindset in camp alongside your training partners training and getting ready to compete on the same card.
Yeah, there’s a group of 4 of us from Goliath fighting on BFC, and there will be some more of the guys travelling down as well to help out. It’s such a positive environment to be in, with everyone pushing each other to be their best.
BFC 4, you will face a strong Toby Heaney who doesn’t mess around. What do you think of him as an opponent after watching him?
Yeah, I’ve seen one of Toby’s fights, and he seems to be a no-nonsense fighter who starts really quickly. It’ll be a great match-up between us two as well. Both come to fight and put on a show.
What do you need to do in your own game to ensure you don’t end up another statistic on his record? Where do you need to be careful, and what holes are you looking to exploit?
I just need to stick to my game plan and not get drawn into any situations where I could make a mistake. Winning this fight isn’t going to be focused on his gameplan. It’s gonna be all about me going in there and doing what I do best.
What to Expect?
You’re looking to right the wrong after facing your first loss. What can the crowd anticipate from you at the end of the month?
The crowd can anticipate the best version of me so far. This fight is going to have it all straight from the first bell. We’ll definitely put on a show for the crowd.
Finally, fans love an official prediction. How does Ben Masterton get it done?
My prediction is that my mix of grappling and striking will be too much for Toby. After I take him down, it won’t last long from there, and I’ll get the finish on the ground, either submission or ground and pound.
