Bertie Oakes isn’t someone whose mind gets caught up on recent wins. His mindset is always to look forward, improve, and move on to the next challenge.
Saturday, 2nd of September, at Golden Ticket Fight Promotions, 23 Oakes defended his strap against Jake Smythe in a bout that was filled with bad blood. The beef went on for months, and both men finally settled their differences in the cage, with Oakes coming out on top via unanimous decision. The victory moved the amateur prospect to (5-2 MMA) and marked his second straight victory.
After a sweet victory, Oakes is looking to return to the gym and plot his next move as the year ends. A few weeks removed from the event, we had the opportunity to speak with Bertie Oakes to see where his head was. Hear what he had to say below.
Post Fight Interview With Bertie Oakes
A few days removed from the victory, Bertie. Now the dust has settled, how are you feeling physically and mentally?
After taking a two-week rest and recovery (eating rubbish) period, I feel recharged mentally and physically. I am back in the gym today, planning for the next opponent.
The title fight between you and Jacob was filled with bad blood. How much sweeter did beating him feel when your hand was raised, given the trash-talk in the build-up? Is the beef finally squashed?
This is the first opponent I have genuinely disliked, and oh, dam, it makes it feel sweeter. It’s been a long time coming. Moving forward, though, I haven’t got time to worry about that beef. My focus is on the next challenge, next camp and opponent.
You earned the unanimous decision with a hard-fought win. How many times have you been able to watch the fight back? Break down your honest feelings and thoughts on your overall performance. Despite winning, is there anything you aren’t pleased with?
In terms of the future, I would definitely like to have 2-3 more amateur fights before the end of the year. But really, I’m just going to focus on being in the gym and getting better, and I’ll be ready for whatever opportunity gets thrown at me.
