Reece McEwan and Liam Gittins will face off for the Cage Warriors bantamweight title at CW 164. The fight is scheduled to take place on 25th November for the vacant 135lb belt. The title was vacated when previous champion Caolan ‘The Don’ Loughran joined the UFC in July.
Both fighters last competed in the month that the former champion left for the UFC. McEwan beat Leandro de Oliveira via second-round stoppage, due to ground and pound, at CW 156. Gittins one-upped the Scotsman at CW 157 with a first-round victory over Janne Elonen-Kulmala.
How Do Reece McEwan and Liam Gittins Match Up?
McEwan has a 7-1 professional record, with his only loss coming to Luke Westwood at Rise and Conquer 9. He is undefeated as a Cage Warriors fighter, and has finished 75% of his fights since joining the promotion in 2022.
Gittins, on the other hand, has been with the European MMA promotion since 2018, and has fought 12 times in that period. He trains out of Next Generation MMA, in Liverpool, and has an 11-4 record as an MMA pro, and a Cage Warriors record of 8-4.
What to Expect From McEwan v Gittins?
As always with Cage Warriors title fights, it’s almost guaranteed to be an action-packed fight.
Both men have shown themselves to be more than capable of finishing on the ground and on the feet. Whether it be via submission or strikes, these two will be looking for opportunities to end the fight early, for the full 25 minutes of action.
No matter who comes out victorious, there are plenty of story lines to look at going forward. Gittins’ Next Gen teammate, and fellow bantamweight, Nathan Fletcher has called out McEwan in the past. Fletcher has a record of 8-1.
If McEwan were to win, that could be a fight that is planned for the future. But if Gittins wins that will create an interesting dynamic in that gym with the champion and a potential challenger training together.
