One of Wales’ MMA pioneers, Brett Johns, is set to make his return to the cage on November 25th at Samurai Fighting Championship 2. The promotion, which was recently rebranded from Cage Warriors Academy Wales, had its first event on October 14th. The card featured two professional bouts, with the plan for it to grow even further.
Now, with just over a month until its second instalment, SFC have announced that Brett is slated to feature.
Brett Johns at Samurai Fighting Championship 2
The inaugural event was headlined by Johns’ teammate, Stephanie Evans, who won herself a multi-fight deal with none other than the PFL. When the rebrand was announced back in June, it was also revealed that they would be partnering with PFL Europe. Now headed up by English MMA icon, Dan Hardy.
With that news in mind, it’s no surprise why so many pros are beginning to take notice. The co-main event winner from the first event, Scott Pedersen, revealed after his victory, that he now intends to secure the title in November and aim to sign with the PFL in 2024.
It’s just been announced that, as well as Johns and Pedersen, Welsh pros; Owain Williams, Josh Reed, Lewis Long and Ioan Harris will all make the walk. With the event taking place, again, in Ebbw Vale, this one is sure to sell-out.
Brett Johns’ Career Recap
Brett “The Pikey” Johns will return to action over a year since his Bellator Dublin win over Jordan Winski. A career which has included becoming Cage Warriors bantamweight champion, 7 UFC bouts and an intriguing Bellator run – and he isn’t done yet.
His record currently sits at 19-3 with a handful of finishes across several promotions. His only losses in the UFC octagon coming against, Aljamain Sterling and Pedro Munhoz. So, why is now the right time for him to take a fight with SFC?
For starters, it will be his first scrap fighting in front of a Welsh crowd in almost 10 years. It’s not currently confirmed whether or not this fight announcement means his time with Bellator is at an end, but it’s fair to say that partnership has come with its frustrations.
The American promotion haven’t found it east matching Johns since signing with them in 2021. He’s been openly pushing for a fight with rival James Gallagher in Dublin. And, back-and-forth injuries, along with zero media attention have slowed the process down even further.
Still only just 31-years-old, there’s no doubt that Brett’s time at top is certainly not finished.
The Return
It’s not been announced who his return fight will be against at this moment in time. So far, none of the professionals on the card have had their opponents released. However, we do have a good idea of how the amateur portion of the card will look.
Levi Batchelor will make his highly anticipated return, hoping to bring home that brand new SFC featherweight belt. Lauren Woolf will compete in her first amateur title bout since switching sports to MMA at the beginning of the year. And, Josh Sinnett looks set to compete for the middleweight title after going 4-0 as an amateur.
Who would you match Brett Johns and the rest of the pros on the card with? Whoever it may be, Samurai Fighting Championship 2 will go down on November 25th in the Ebbw Vale Sports Centre. Tickets are on sale now and we’ll be covering the whole event right here. Stay tuned.
