Brett Johns has been calling for a fight with Ireland’s own James Gallagher for months. After his dominant performance against Jordan Winski, Johns called out Gallagher once again.
Brett Johns Recent Performance at Bellator 285
Johns was scheduled to face Gallagher at Bellator Dublin on September 23rd. Seemingly out of nowhere, Gallagher pulled out of the bout and was replaced by Jordan Winski. Johns expressed his disinterest in fighting Winski but was willing to fight anyone Bellator put in front of him- in exchange for another opportunity at Gallagher.
Brett went on to defeat Winski in a dominant performance across three rounds. Using his supreme wrestling to smother and disable Winski’s advantages, Brett comfortably gained a decision win. Bellator seemed unhappy with this win as Brett had no time on the microphone after this victory and little coverage during the highlights of the show. Fight week was a similar story for the Welshman. Although some fans were not impressed by John’s performance, we later learned that he entered the fight with pre-existing injuries. Brett’s coach stated that Johns could not spar for three weeks leading up to the fight due to a broken rib.
Treatment of Johns Following His Victory
Both Brett and his team expressed their frustrations surrounding the treatment of Johns during fight week. With little to no promotion, interviews, or coverage, this left the team dumbfounded. Head coach of Shore mma and cornerman to Johns tweeted the following: “No mic time after the fight. No media interviews before the fight. No media interviews after the fight. Pathetic, to be honest. Top 3 bantamweight in the organisation but being held back for some reason”.
Brett has been vocal in interviews and social media, stating that his only plan now is to secure the fight with Gallagher. He tweeted out today, “It’s time for the Bellator team to send me that contract! I’ll sign the thing today! Can’t say the same for him. February 24th 2023, Dublin, 3 arenas! Behind enemy lines. That’s exactly what I want!” Johns has also been going back and forth on social media with Gallagher, with both men engaging in a war of words leading to their eventual clash.
What the Future Holds
It is clear to see that Johns is doing everything he can to make this fight happen. With no shortage of hype, this fight could potentially headline the Dublin card. Both men bring an army of fans with them to their fights, with a country’s pride on the line (Wales vs Ireland) this is one fight you won’t want to miss! Gallagher is currently ranked two places ahead of Johns in the bantamweight rankings. Whoever becomes victorious in this fight edges ever closer to title contention. With Johns putting his career on the line saying, “If I don’t finish him, cut me!” it is clear to see that he is not taking Gallagher lightly.
Fight updates are likely to emerge in the following weeks, so stay tuned for breaking news!
