UFC Edmonton took place last night and has been marred with controversy, and the fans want Dana White to change things
On the prelims for the card was a bantamweight bout between Garrett Armfield and Serhiy Sidey. The fight was relatively competitive however most fans watching felt Armfield won the contest clearly. However, the judges seemingly saw it differently scoring the fight 29-28 for Sidey.
As with most controversial or dodgy decisions this again has kicked up a fuss about judging. In this case the criticism as with most cases has been levied at the judges. And again we will go through the same cycle where fans complain, fighters complain, and Dana White complains and nothing gets done.
Garret Armfield Robbed at UFC Edmonton, Calls for Dana White to Review
Armfield took to Twitter to vent his frustrations about the decision.
In his Tweet he rightfully calls for the judges to be investigated and brings up the real consequence of being robbed. A fighter when they lose only get half the amount they get if they win. And given the UFC’s pay leaves a lot to be desired losing a decision you should have won can really sting financially.
He also asks for Donald Trump and Dana White to get involved. Calling for Trump’s involvement is strange given he isn’t in any position to get involved in the affairs of another country and hasn’t been elected yet. Trump is also hardly a beacon of justice. However, asking for Dana’s involvement makes plenty of sense give he’s the head of the organisation.
However, unfortunately for Garrett this likely won’t change anything. We have seen many awful decisions over the course of the UFC with fans, fighters, and Dana himself complaining but nothing gets done. Dana could very easily solve this problem by actually having these bad scores have consequences. Dana could implement a fine system as well as refusing to hire bad judges. He could also allow these awful decisions to be overturned and have that process be established. But, Instead he’ll occasionally fire a judge if it’s particularly egregious
Serhiy Sidey Gives His Opinion on UFC Edmonton Win
The fighter who gets the good end of the stick in these bad decisions is always in a unenviable position. And Sidney was unfortunately put in this decision. However, he handled the situation with grace in the post fight press conference.
Sidey essentially says that the fight was close however he’s unsure if he should have got the decision. That’s really the most you can expect from a fighter. For most fighters admitting you lost a decision which you officially won is extremely difficult. But, Sidey gave a classy and thought out response.
Regardless Serhiy Sidey has a win added to his record and Garrett Armfield has a loss added. And this will keep happening until Dana and the UFC decide to make a change so until that happens we’ll have to keep seeing this cycle play out.
