Interview With Calvin Mooney
Calvin, you are set for your second outing of 2023, with another fight pencilled in for next month. Was the plan to always try and keep this busy this year?
I had a fight booked the weekend before, too, but Peter Newti has pulled out on me twice now, but the plan has been to be as busy as possible.
With fighting every several months, how’s the body feeling? Do you actively use anything for recovery? Ice baths etc.?
Preparation previously has been poor due to injuries, but now I’ve spent more time focused on maintenance and recovery. It’s the best it’s ever been. Active recovery is very effective for me.
You secured your second unanimous decision win last time on Caged Steel 31. What did you make of the fight, your performance, and the night overall?
Good experience, but my performance could have been much better. After two opponents pulled out, I had to do two weight cuts, going down a weight class in a week for the same day weigh-in; otherwise, I wouldn’t have had an opponent, but I still dominated every round.
Calvin Mooney on Opponent Switch
Saturday night, you meet a fairly experienced Geoff Pavey. What were your initial thoughts when the fight was offered to you?
Geoff Pavey has pulled out as well, but I’ve been told I’ve got a replacement same weight who beat one of my teammates last time.
Have you and the team looked back at Geoff’s previous bouts? What do you see when you look into his game?
My new opponent looks comfortable striking but is not much of a grappler, so if I can’t knock him out, I just need to get a hold of him.
In the last few fights, you’ve banked some solid rounds and gained some valuable experience. However, do you feel the first career finish is on the horizon?
Better preparation and weight cuts, putting more and more into training all areas of fighting, it’s going to help me find the finish quickly.
Sell the upcoming fight from your standpoint. What can the Almighty crowd expect from Calvin Mooney on Saturday night?
You can expect another dominating win from me staying undefeated and only getting started.
