Casey O’Neill has been reviewing her options for dropping down to strawweight. The undefeated fighter has been working her way through competition at flyweight but isn’t ruling out a potential cut to 115lbs.
Following a split decision win over Roxanne Modafferi at UFC 271, O’Neill found herself at 4-0 in the promotion. Although it seems O’Neill is set to start taking on flyweight elite, she claims to want to fight the best at strawweight too.
Her latest victory put her at number 10 at flyweight with wins over the likes of Modafferi and Antonina Shevchenko. In her interview with The AllStar’s John Hyon Ko, ‘King Casey’ claimed she cuts ‘zero weight’. This will definitely mean strawweight is an option for the Scottish-born fighter
The Jump to 115lbs
At such a young age the possibility of moving to strawweight seems likely. Prior to the UFC, the 25-year-old held belts at 115lbs, although did miss weight prior to her jump to 125lbs.
Both the strawweight and the flyweight divisions have an abundance of talent for O’Neill to battle in the Octagon. Neither division will be an easy route to the top. Some of the best female fighters ever currently reside in each division.
Recovering from an ACL injury and surgery on the said injury will likely leave her side-lined until 2023. Having not fought since February of this year, she will be itching for a fight that will likely be taking place at 125lbs for now.
With age on her side, however, the undefeated prospect has plenty of time to choose her fate in the promotion.
Long-term aspirations at strawweight mean O’Neill will likely have to choose her weight class before she gets too involved with another.
The ability of the young fighter means she cannot be counted out by anyone. Whoever she faces next will be in for a true test for her opponent. The young Scott is jam-packed with confidence and skill to go with it.
