Back in 2017, two of the combat sporting worlds collided. Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr came together for a boxing match dubbed ‘The Money Fight’. The contest achieved 4.3 million domestic PPV sales according to Showtime. This makes it the 2nd largest PPV buy rate ever. Mayweather eventually won via TKO in the 10th round, but the UFC superstar faired far better than many expected.
What Have the Pair Done Since?
Floyd Mayweather Jr improved his professional record to 50-0 that night and has not fought professionally again since. However, Floyd has fought in lots of exhibition fights against stars from other combat sports as well Youtube and other television shows.
Conor made his full time return to MMA going up against the best has to offer in Khabib, Cerrone and Poirier twice. McGregor has been on the shelf for the best part of 2 years after suffering a horrendous leg break in his last outing. However, Conor recently filmed a new series of TUF and is expected to make his return to the Octagon against rival coach Michael Chandler at the tail end of the year.
Is a Rematch on the Cards?
There have been many rumblings over a part 2 mega fight over the years but the comments made by Leonard Ellerbe (CEO of Mayweather Promotions) have given the potential fight more traction than it has had in a long time. Ellerbe was a guest on the MMA hour this week where he said a few interesting remarks on the rematch. In the interview Ellerbe stated “I would love a rematch”. He was full of praise for McGregor and the UFC throughout. It was conclusive that Ellerbe would be more than interested in pitting his client together with The Notorious one more time.
Conor took to Twitter in response to the interview. He too would appear to have an interest in making this happen.
When could we see Mayweather McGregor 2?
Well truthfully, we don’t really know. Conor certainly seems like he may be tied up for the remainder of 2023 but McGregor is pretty unpredictable and has more control over his future than anyone we’ve ever seen in the MMA game. That being said, Conor isn’t normally one to commit to a fight and not follow through. So, for what it’s worth, I do expect Conor to fulfil his agreement to fight Chandler before diving back into another Boxing bout.
In the future this fight could definitely happen. Neither party has been shy about expressing their love for a payday and this would undoubtedly fall into that category. You can expect both guys to be active in one way or another in 2024 so the door is open. Conor is still a regular at Crumlin Boxing Club so he is not out of the loop in regards to his Boxing training. I do think that the direction Conor takes in 2024 very much depends on the outcome of his upcoming fight with Michael Chandler. If he were to come up short, well I think we may well see a rematch with Floyd sooner rather than later.
