Chael Sonnen’s recent revelation has stirred some waves in the combat sports community. The former UFC middleweight contender, who is currently stationed in Miami, Florida, for the upcoming UFC 299 event, has disclosed that he was escorted to an undisclosed location by security due to threats from none other than Jorge Masvidal.
Scheduled to provide analysis alongside lightweight contender Anthony Smith at the UFC 299 ‘O’Malley vs. Vera’ pay-per-view event, Sonnen took to his YouTube channel to share his concerns regarding his safety:
Chael Sonnen Moved to Secret Location Due to Jorge Masvidal
“I’m in Miami, I’m at an undisclosed location and I can’t have anything on the wall, because nobody’s allowed to know where I am. Who made those rules? Those two (security guards) who will be standing at my door all night. Why Chael, are you telling us that you have a blank wall behind you with two security guards who will be staying all night when you are about to go to sleep because you are in Miami? Well, I’ve been threatened by Jorge Masvidal. I am at a separate location than everybody else with two security guards because I’ve been threatened by Jorge Masvidal.”
Masvidal, a Miami native, has been vocal about his disdain for Sonnen in the past. In an interview on ‘The MMA Hour’ with Ariel Helwani, Masvidal didn’t mince words:
Masvidal On Chael Sonnen
“Chael would be one guy that I would love to break his eye orbital. Just because he’s such a cheating fk. Like he’s gotten caught with more substances in his body than any other competitor in the history. At one time he had like six or seven different substances in his body for one of his title fights. It’s like you’re a fking piece of sh*t human being.”
Given Masvidal’s history of confrontations, including sucker punches and street altercations, Sonnen’s decision to prioritize his safety with heightened security measures seems understandable.
