UFC Veteran and Hall-Of-Famer Chael Sonnen Has Spoken About Cornerning Colby Covington at UFC Tampa
UFC Welterweight Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington was handed his second loss in a row against Joaquin Buckley on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night Tampa. The first time Covington has held back-to-back defeats in his career, Colby was beaten to a merciful doctor’s stoppage.
In the fight Buckley landed a vicious uppercut on Covington in the first round, opening up a deep cut over Covington’s eye. As the rounds wore on and Buckley piled on the pressure, the cut grew wider and wider.
After a blood-soaked third round concluded, the doctor intervened and called off the fight. The victory extends Buckley’s perfect Welterweight record to 6, putting him in the title picture.
For Covington, he took the fight on short notice after almost a year out of the cage. The time off did not seem to improve Covington who looked rusty and struggled to get going.
Ahead of the fight, ‘Chaos’ elected UFC legend Chael Sonnen to be in his corner for the fight. Looking to draw inspiration from ‘The American Gangster,’ his greatness was not transferable as Buckley brushed aside the lacklustre Covington.
After the fight, Chael Sonnen took to YouTube to share some surprising news about cornering Colby Covington.
Chael Sonnen’s Insight
In a video shared to Chael Sonnen’s YouTube channel after the fight, Sonnen had lots to say. Despite Colby disagreeing with the stoppage, Sonnen shared he was thinking about throwing in the towel before the doctor did:
“Colby was getting hit on his feet with everything you could do, he’s busted open so bad that the doctor has to look at it three times.” Adding. “Twice, he stops the action to let it keep going, the third time he goes ‘Man we can’t keep going anymore’. I was going to stop that fight, I already grabbed the towel.
Additionally Sonnen stated:
“When the doctor came in for the third time, and I’m watching that blood, it’s not stopping. It’s going into the eye, and that’s the only thing you’re really looking for. When we as fight fans, as ‘tough guys’, think the doctor should’ve stopped it, we’re talking about it doesn’t matter how bad the cut is from our perspective, as long as it’s not going in the eye. If it’s blinding the guy, it doesn’t matter if it’s a little or a lot…it’s the exact same thing. I said ‘Hand me that towel, I’m stopping this’.”
Although Covington would have disagreed with his corner, Sonnen wanted to save Covington from himself.
