Chael Sonnen is widely considered one of the funniest & most laid-back athletes to ever feature on the UFC roster. The Oregon native had recently overheard a conversation between the UFC’s very own Joe Rogan and boxing veteran Mike Tyson, which prompted Chael to think about who the scariest MMA fighter of all time is – and by the sounds of things, its not even close.
The former UFC title challenger recently said on his ‘You’re Welcome’ Podcast‘:

“The scariest fighter in MMA history: I had, with a pretty sizable gap, Cain Velasquez”
“He had the whole bit: He lad the look, he had the eyes, he had the jawline, the stoicness, the rumours and reputation, the work ethic. He had the record, he had the knockouts, the colegiate résumé. But there was something scary about a big guy that had the level of conditioning. We don’t see that very often, not that level, not where they can be on you that hard, non-stop.”
Chael revealed that it wasn’t only the former heavyweight champion’s fighting style that he feared but also the stories that would be revolving around the MMA community before he had even competed professionally.
“There’s a story, and it’s never died down, where Cain Velasquez goes into AKA and it’s his first day,” said Sonnen. “He’s trying to introduce himself, or get the attention of Javier Mendez, and Javier is working with somebody when this guy is coming over and trying to talk to him. Javier wants to give him [attention], but he’s doing something.
Chael went on to name some of his ‘honourable mentions’ such as Brock Lesnar & Alistair Overeem, although he believes the real battle is between Cain & Current Heavyweight champion ‘The Predator’ Francis Ngannou.
“If we went head-to-head and I wanted to argue Cain, and you wanted to argue Francis, you could always tell me Francis knocked out Cain, right? That debate is going to go on,”
“We’re not talking about who the best is, or who’s the most effective, or who has the most beautiful résumé. [We’re talking] scary. It’s a unique word.
“My opinion? Velasquez.”
Velasquez’s Misfortune
At the time of writing, Cain Velasquez currently faces multiple charges after allegedly pursuing & firing rounds at a car. The car reportedly contained a man accused of molesting Velasquez’s son whilst at day care.
A passenger inside the car was struck by a bullet, ultimately sustaining non-life-threatening injuries following the alleged attack.
Velasquez was soon arrested & charged with attempted, premeditated murder. He spent several months in prison before being released on bail. Cain is scheduled back in court on March 8th.
He could face life imprisonment if found guilty.
