Chris Weidman will make his long-awaited return since his severe leg break back in 2021. He’ll make his comeback at UFC 292 in August.
The “All-American” shot to UFC superstardom when he ended the dominant championship reign of Anderson Silva back in 2013. He then defended the belt against Silva, Lyoto Machida & Vitor Belfort. He lost the belt when he ran into Luke Rockhold in 2015.
Since the Rockhold loss Chris Weidman has had mixed fortunes in the Octagon. He’s gone 2-5 and has lost fights to the likes of Yoel Romero, Gegard Mousasi and Jan Blachowicz (at light heavyweight). His last fight was against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 back in 2021.
Weidman Discusses’ the Injury
Speaking at a grappling event this year Weidman said:
“These last two years have been the hardest years of my life. I don’t want to cry, I’m not going to cry, but I don’t know if you know this, but I snapped my leg in half in April 2021, and I wasn’t sure I was ever going to be able to compete again in anything, and so to able to come out here and put a show for you guys, win or lose, is truly a dream.”
As for Weidman’s opponent, Brad Tavares he’s a 22-fight UFC veteran and has been in the promotion since 2010. He’s also fought a who’s who of the middleweight division; Israel Adesanya, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker to name a few.
Brad is currently on a 2 fight-losing streak and most recently fought Bruno Silva in April of this year. There’s no easy matchups in the UFC and this fight will no doubt be a big challenge for Weidman on his return.
The card is headlined by the hugely anticipated bantamweight title fight between Weidmans longtime friend and training partner Aljamain Sterling, and he’ll face off against the popular contender Sean O’Malley
