Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt has withdrew from his UFC Vegas 100 co-main event against Miles Johns this weekend.
Per BJPENN.com, the 33-year-old has been forced out of the bout due to undisclosed reasons. His opponent is reportedly hoping to stay on the card and face a short-notice opponent.
This was set to be Garbrandt’s second fight this year, looking to bounce back from the UFC 300 loss to Deiveson Figueiredo. Prior to that, he was undergoing a sort of redemption arc after consecutive wins over Brian Kelleher and Trevin Jones.
‘No Love’ won the UFC bantamweight championship in December 2016 with a jaw-dropping performance over Dominick Cruz before suffering a run of one win and five losses.
Miles Johns, his scheduled opponent, is on quite the run himself. With just one loss in the last seven, a win over the former champ may have seen him enter the 135lb rankings. He now faces the anxious wait to see if he will still fight on Saturday night.
Cody Garbrandt Out of UFC Vegas 100 Co-Main Event
The event this weekend will be the UFC’s 100th event inside the Las Vegas-based UFC Apex. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, all UFC events were housed here in front of no fans.
Some notable moments include the five round war between Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker, Kamaru Usman’s statement win over former teammate Gilbert Burns, and Francis Ngannou winning the heavyweight title in devastating fashion when he knocked out Stipe Miocic.
UFC Vegas 100 sees welterweight prospect Carlos Prates take on the eternal 170lb gatekeeper Neil Magny in the main event. A win for the 31-year-old ‘Fighting Nerd’ propels him to the upper echelons of the division, where title aspirations will be on the horizon.
