Cody Garbrandt returns to bantamweight with a well-needed victory, taking out Trevin Jones bus unanimous decision at UFC 285.
Round 1
Cody Garbrandt starts with some electric kicks to the body. Both men are staying steady waiting for their opportunity and not rushing forward. The speed of Cody is clear as he gets in, lands and gets out again in the blink of an eye.
A round for confidence building for both. Not much action as each are waiting to counter.
Round 2
Round two starts and almost immediately Garbrandt lands a mic double leg taking the fight to the mat. The control doesn’t last long but the threat of the takedown should play on Jones’ mind moving forward. Another perfectly timed takedown from Garbrandt sees him back on top.
Trevin Jones closes the guard and Cody behind to work. As Jones looks to get to his feet, Garbrandt swiftly takes the back against the fence. On the exit Cody land a nice knee. It’s Jones’ turn to attempt a takedown but the Garbrandt defence stays strong.
Round 3
In the corner Trevin’s coaches are extremely honest with him, saying he needs a finish. Jones seems to enter round 3 with more urgency but Cody is too slick to hit this far.
Trevin is on the front foot, but he’s only following the lateral movement of Garbrandt. Even when Jones does throw, Cody sees the strikes coming and avoids them with ease. Trevin finally throws tie strikes back to back landing both flush on the chin of Garbrandt which holds strong.
With one minute on the clock, Trevin scores a takedown and looks to work. Jones does land a nice shot but it’s too little too late.
Not the prettiest of performances but a necessary one moving forward for Cody. He wins the bout via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
