At the press conference of the upcoming UFC 296 event, Colby Covington might have once again crossed the line with his trash talks. The former interim welterweight champion made a repulsive comment on Leon Edwards deceased father. Unsurprisingly, the current UFC 170 lb king didn’t take his opponent’s words kindly and replied in a violent way.
For anybody following the promotion, this might not be surprising, considering Covington is known for his no-holds-barred style of trash talking. The welterweight took on a heel persona back in 2017 and has since ignored all limits with his verbal onslaught. From making PG comments on fighters’ wives to accusing them of paedophilia, ‘Chaos’ trash talk seems to have no bounds. But this time, this mudslinging might have hit rock bottom.
Colby Covington Enrages Leon Edwards With His Comments
At the recently concluded UFC 296 press conference, things became heated between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington. As expected from an event involving Covington, trash talk was in the air. But things went south after the former NCAA wrestler made an indecent remark about the Englishman’s deceased father.
“You might be the stupidest guy on the UFC roster. Literally, you are so fu**ing stupid. On Saturday night, I’m going to bring you to a place you never want to be,” said Covington. “I’m bringing you to the seventh layer of hell. We’ll say ‘what’s up’ to your dad while we’re there,” he continued.
To no one’s surprise, the comments rubbed ‘Rocky’ the wrong way. The mostly cool Birmingham native instantly responded by throwing the mic at the American. This almost turned into a brawl between the two opponents. However, before it could escalate any further, the officials quickly stepped in to stop the welterweights.
What Happened to Leon Edwards’ Father?
Back in August 2022, Leon Edwards broke the internet after he finished then-champion Kamaru Usman at the main event of UFC 278. Although Usman dominated most of the fight, a well-timed kick from the Englishman knocked the Nebraska native out. ‘Rocky’ would then go on to upset the former champion once again, after scoring another win over the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ at UFC 286.
This win didn’t just legitimize his previous triumph, which according to many was a fluke, but also made ‘Rocky’ the only fighter to beat Usman in the UFC’s 170 lb division. Truly a remarkable feat, but things weren’t always so smooth for the 32-year-old. Born in Jamaica, Edwards had a rough upbringing.
According to him, he grew up around crime, and his father was involved in ‘questionable business’. At the age of 9, Edwards’ family moved to England, where his father was shot at a nightclub when the fighter was just 13. As a teen, the champ was involved in several unlawful activities himself. But all of that changed for good when Edwards’ mother made him join an MMA club at the age of 19.
