Colby Covington and Buckley Clash in Tampa
The last UFC event of 2024 was a welterweight showdown between Colby Covington and Joaquin Buckley. After the third round had finished, the fight was called off by the doctor due to a cut above Covington’s eye. Crowning Buckley the winner by TKO.
The gnarly injury was noted by Chael Sonnen, who was in Covington’s corner during the fight.
Sonnen came clean about the injury, admitting that regardless of the doctor’s decision – he was ready to throw in the towel.
Two weeks on from the fight, ‘Chaos’ has responded to Sonnen’s statement.
Sonnen Was Ready To Stop The Fight Between Colby Covington and Buckley
Sonnen provided his viewpoint on his YouTube channel after the fight. Explaining that blood continuing to flow from the cut made him ready to throw in the towel.
He said: “He’s busted open so bad that the doctor has to look at it three times. Twice, he stops the action to let it keep going, the third time he goes ‘Man we can’t keep going anymore’. I was going to stop that fight; I already grabbed the towel.”
“When the doctor came in for the third time, and I’m watching that blood, it’s not stopping.” Prompting Sonnen to turn to the rest of his corner and say “‘Hand me that towel, I’m stopping this.'”
Covington Adresses Sonnen’s Comments
Known for his willingness to go out on his shield, Covington finally responded to Sonnen’s willingness to throw in the towel.
He said: “I mean, my opinion is that Chael cares about me, he’s a real one. If he was throwing it in, it’s because he knows that I couldn’t see, he knows that where the cut was at, it was bleeding into my right eye, and I couldn’t see – I was seeing three of four different people.”
“So, that’s what it is; that guy [Buckley] couldn’t do nothing to me, not even seeing anything, or seeing blurry, coming off the couch. Look at how far my back was against the wall, but I did it for the company.”
Covington was also adamant that he was gaining momentum during the fight.
“I thought I was coming on stronger. I feel like they were going to have to throw in the towel for Buckley by the end of round five. So it sucks, it’s unfortunate.”
