Perennial welterweight contender Colby Covington has responded to undefeated rising star Ian Machado Garry’s call out from UFC 298.
The former title contender has been relatively quiet after being beaten comprehensively by Leon Edwards at UFC 296. It is now three attempts at a welterweight belt for Covington was all three failing, many believe it is now time for the American to defend his rankings to up and coming contenders.
Covington rose to the top of the division after a 7 fight win streak stretching between 2016 and 2019 with a wins over legends like Robbie Lawler and Rafael Dos Anjos. At the end of 2019 he got his shot against current king Kamaru Usman. It was a war of a fight before Covington eventually crumbled to a TKO defeat in round 5. A bounce back win against Tyron Woodley earned a rematch with Usman but the same result occurred, defeat. A vicious rivalry with Jorge Masvidal broiled for years, eventually settled in the octagon at UFC 272 however the bad blood remains. Covington then sat out for over 20 months and got that third shot and still it ended in disappointment.
Now the MMA community want Covington fighting contenders rather than awaiting a title shot after one win. Ian Machado Garry has called for a fight with the American after his biggest career win at UFC 298 in February. The call out comes as no surprise, Garry has faced vicious remarks from other fighters particularly commenting on his personal life. Unsurprisingly, Sean Strickland and Colby Covington were in the middle of it and both were called out by the Irishman.
Colby Covington Names his Terms to Ian Garry
Obviously, the response from Covington is full of vitriol and smug remarks in a video he posted on X.
The brash American lists his three stipulations for Garry to meet if they are ever to compete in the octagon.
“Stipulation one, you and that gold digging w**** got to turn your Instagram comments back on, if you turn them off before the fight you forfeit the fight.” The vile comments from Covington are not out of character and the stipulation arises from Garry switching off his comments when he was getting regular abuse on his social media towards himself and his family.
“Stipulation two, Ian we have heard you cry and beg on your knees but we all know you are not the boss and you don’t wear the pants in the relationship. Layla you got 60 seconds to convince me and the people why this fight needs to happen.” Comments towards Layla Machado Garry, the partner of Ian have been consistent and vicious over social media particularly from MMA fans who share the same view here as Covington.
“Now for stipulation number three, my personal favourite, as you all might have noticed something’s been missing from my ‘mybookie’ promos lately. That’s because I have been saving a spot for a special someone, Layla you want to be a star?” Further derogatory comments towards Garry’s wife as Covington offered her a place on one of his gambling partner promotions.
Garry is yet to respond to the video from Covington.
