Colby Covington’s (17-4 MMA) last title shot came at UFC 296, and Leon Edwards (22-3 MMA) dominated him for all five rounds. Edwards picked up a unanimous decision victory, and the UFC commentary team felt that Covington did not do nearly enough to make the most of his opportunity.
Dana White and company felt that Covington let time slip away from him. Inactivity can be a curse, and it appears that this was Covington‘s downfall.
The UFC boss said: “My take on it is when you’re 35 years old or any age in this sport and you’re like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to wait,’ waiting is never a good idea in this sport. This sport doesn’t wait for anybody.”
He continued on: ““He looked slow tonight…” White said. “Looked like (Colby Covington) had trouble dealing with his speed and then getting out-wrestled too. Not to mention Leon absolutely destroyed that leg too.”
Doubling down, White even went as far to say Covington looked “slow and old”. “Colby just looked slow and old tonight, in my opinion,” White said. “I think everybody felt the same way. I mean, he got out-wrestled by Leon tonight.”
Colby Covington Says Communication Tough After Fight
Colby Covington gave a recent appearance on Submission Radio, where he gave his side of the story. ““I haven’t been able to be in touch with him,” he said. “I’m in touch with Hunter Campbell and they’re aware of what’s going on. The UFC is aware of my foot and giving me the best care possible.”
Covington, however, did say that there were no hard feelings with White. He chalked it up to more of a communications breakdown, and seems to be in good spirits going forward.
“They’re aware what’s going on now with the facts, I was on a broken foot the whole fight,” Covington said. “It is what it is. I like my boss giving me hard, rough criticism, because it makes me want to work harder and prove them wrong. But I respect Dana’s opinion. He’s done great things. He’s changed my life… I have no bad things to say about Dana.”
As far as Covington’s future, it seems like it is up in the air as to where he goes next. However, Covington seems to have faith in White and the organization. We will see where it heads next.
