Amateur flyweight Connor Walsh picked up the Kingdom Combat Championship flyweight title on Saturday past in Liverpool with a convincing performance over Luke Burns.
The bout had a ton of bad blood and tension in the build-up, but it was Walsh who was able to talk-the-talk and walk-the-walk at the final bell. Having attained his first belt of 2023, the Liverpudlian has his eyes firmly locked on Joe Fields, who has that No.1 UK flyweight ranking next to his name.
Walsh has the opportunity to steal the ranking, and that’s exactly what he plans on doing when both men square off at Full Contact Contender’s upcoming show on March 25th for the promotions flyweight strap.
We caught up with Connor Walsh post-fight to get his thoughts on a stellar showing on KCC.
Post-fight Thoughts With Connor Walsh
You’re fresh from a massive victory straight off the bat this year. Having looked back on Saturday night. How did you feel in there against Luke Burns?
Yeah, a big win on the weekend against an awkward opponent. I felt good in there. The main thing is that I enjoyed it while in there like I always do. I felt like he didn’t have much to offer me through the fight, just gutted I couldn’t get the finish, but there was no rush.
There was some bad blood, it seemed, after the bell. Where did that stem from? Is that just a frustration on Luke’s part after the build-up you both endured?
Luke talked a lot of shit in the build-up to the fight, and I think at the end of the fight like he knew what had just happened to him, and he didn’t know how to react. That’s what I thought anyway.
It seemed like you were heavily supported by the crowd during your walk to the cage on Saturday. How does it make you feel having this support this early in your career?
The crowd on Saturday was the best crowd I have fought in front of. They made some noise there Saturday night.
Walsh Talks Confidence
You come across as a confident individual anyway, but what does leaving with the flyweight title do to your confidence moving forward?
I’m always confident I have a skill that many people don’t have. I work so hard for it day in and day out, and I know if I put the work in, no one can beat me. I know I know how good I am. The gold doesn’t mean much to me; I just want to keep getting better and better and be unstoppable in the future.
A belt to start the year isn’t bad, right? Now, what does the rest of the year look like for you now you’ve you’ve got the first win of the year under your belt?
A good way to start the year 100%. A good performance. Now, we’re back again in 4 weeks to go for the number one spot in the UK and go and take that off him.
