Former UFC featherweight and lightweight Champion Conor McGregor messaged newly crowned Bantamweight Champion ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley for the first time following his title win at UFC 292. O’Malley shared in an interview with The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, August 22 the conversation went as follows;
Conor McGregor Messages Sean O’Malley
McGregor: “Baby we did it!”
O’Malley: “We sure (expletive) did! Are you the main event in December and I’m Co-main eventing?”
McGregor: “Shot Caller!”
It is worth noting that McGregor is not eligible to fight until February 2024 due to his absence from USADA’s testing pool. However, McGregor does have a possibility of fighting this year if he is granted an exemption, and you would have to think the UFC would do whatever they can to make this event a reality. To have 2 of the biggest stars the sport has ever seen headline the last PPV of the year would be a card for the ages.
Potential Fights to Make For UFC 296
If the 2 biggest stars in the UFC were to headline and co-headline UFC 296 the UFC would want it to be the most marketable fights for each of them. For McGregor that could be opposing TUF coach Michael Chandler, a fourth fight with rival Dustin Poirier, or maybe a fight with newly minted BMF Champion Justin Gaethje. All of these options are more than viable for McGregor’s long-awaited return as they are all strikers that consistently put on crowd-pleasing fights.
For new champion Sean O’Malley, the possibilities are just as enticing, he could have a rematch with Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera to avenge his lone professional loss. In today’s interview, he also mentioned a fight with former double champ and Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo, to add another historic name to his record. Many feel Merab Dvalishvili would be most deserving of the next title shot, however, he is coming off of hand surgery and is a teammate of former champion Aljamain Sterling. Much like McGregor, the UFC would rather match O’Malley up with an exciting striker that would favor his style slightly more.
Will we see McGregor and O’Malley fight alongside one another in December? Let us know in the comments!
