Superstar Conor McGregor has made his thoughts known on betting your fight purse.
The recent trend of fighters putting their whole purses on the line has been unavoidable. This weekend, in one of the biggest bouts in boxing history, Gervonta Davis is set to take on Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas. The two of them agreed that the entire fight purse will go to the winner.
Many other fighters have placed similar bets. Jake Paul and Tommy Fury agreed to bet their entire fight purses prior to their bout in Saudi Arabia. With Fury’s father, John Fury, agreeing on behalf of Tommy, they shook hands. After the loss, Paul never paid his half, as it was never agreed in writing.
Just recently, UFC flyweight Muhammad Mokaev called out Brandon Royval for a bout in Abu Dhabi. In doing so, Mokaev put his whole purse on the line. Royval has since declined the bout, but with Mokaev putting his whole purse on the table, he follows a trend that has been prevalent through combat sports lately.
Conor McGregor on Fighters Betting Their Purses
Former simultaneous UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor has made his thoughts clear on the matter of the fight purse. ‘It’s stupid. Train hard. Fight hard. Earn your dough. And then enjoy it.” he said on his Twitter.
McGregor states that due to the unpredictable nature of our sport, betting an entire purse is foolish. You can never predict what will happen; even if you could, McGregor says it never happens anyway.
McGregor also claims that he would not put up his purse against his upcoming bout with Michael Chandler following this years The Ultimate Fighter. He would rather ensure he has money “for [his] loved ones”.
