One person who isn’t upset about the controversial decision in the Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal fight is Conor McGregor.
The Irish superstar, known for his legendary UFC run and feuds with both Diaz and Masvidal, bet a hefty $500,000 on Diaz, his old rival. This gamble paid off big time, thanks to Diaz’s underdog status.
During the ten-round boxing match in California, Masvidal seemed to land cleaner punches, yet the judges’ scorecards told a different story. One judge even scored the fight eight rounds to two in favor of Diaz, giving him his first win since 2022.
The storied rivalry between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, marked by two memorable bouts in 2016, always seemed destined for a trilogy. Despite their fierce competition, there’s a grudging respect between them. It’s rare for McGregor to bet against Diaz.
Conor McGregor Earns Over $1.6 Million After Nate Diaz Beats Jorge Masvidal in Boxing Match
On Saturday night, McGregor backed his words with money. He shared on social media, “I’ve decided to put $500,000 on Diaz to win tonight’s boxing match. Range, form, experience, solely hands being used, I can’t see Jorge Masvidal causing any problems to Nate in a boxing ring whatsoever.”
But McGregor couldn’t resist a cheeky jab, adding, “They are both little play around dipss in a fight, play around b**, but I feel Nate does him in EASY here for real. $500k gets me back $1,625,000 all in.”
After Diaz’s victory, McGregor celebrated on social media, posting, “THE RICH GET RICHER!!! Well done Nate, congrats!” Later, he referred to the winnings as “Yacht fuel” and thanked Diaz with a “Nice! Thanks.”
Throughout the fight, Masvidal seemed to be scoring points with his bigger shots and causing more damage. Their initial fight at UFC 244 had been stopped due to a cut, but this boxing match allowed them to settle their feud. Surprisingly, the judges favoured Diaz, with only one judge scoring it a draw for Masvidal.
The Aftermath
In the aftermath, Diaz called out his future opponents, aiming for big rematches. First, he wants to avenge his loss to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, who beat him last summer. Then, he aims to challenge for the welterweight world title in the UFC against Leon Edwards, who defeated him in 2021.
“I’m going to beat Jake Paul’s fing a,” Diaz declared in his post-fight interview. “And I’m down to fight the highest ranked boxer I can find, I don’t know who the f** he is. My main objective has always been to be the best fighter in the world so I’m going to go back to get a UFC title. Leon Edwards, Jake Paul, anybody else, you’re dead.”
McGregor’s profitable bet and Diaz’s victory have set the stage for more exciting matchups, promising fans plenty of action in the future.
