Conor McGregor is making waves again by hinting at a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather. This comes after their first encounter back in 2017, which generated a lot of buzz and a hefty payday. Now, the 36-year-old MMA star is eager to step into the ring with the boxing legend once more.
In their initial fight, Mayweather, who is now 47, came out on top, extending his perfect professional record to 50 wins with no losses. The bout took place in Las Vegas, and McGregor was making his boxing debut. It ended in the 10th round when the referee called a stop to the action. Before the stoppage, Mayweather was comfortably ahead on the scorecards, but McGregor believes he has what it takes to take on the boxing great again.
McGregor recently made his feelings known during an event in Marbella, just before the Bare-Knuckle Fighting Championship. In an energetic rant, he called out not only Mayweather but also KSI and his long-time rival, Nate Diaz.
Conor McGregor Confirms Floyd Mayweather Talks Ongoing for Rematch
“Floyd, you little pussycat! You’re doing back conversations trying to get boxing fights at 155lbs,” McGregor shouted, clearly excited about the prospect of a rematch.
He didn’t stop there. “Fight me at my weight! I’m the A-side [and] you owe me! Bare-knuckle – McGregor vs. Mayweather [at] 170lbs, let’s go, baby – take off the gloves and fight b****!”
These bold statements show McGregor’s confidence and readiness to take on Mayweather in a different format. He suggested the idea of a match at a higher weight and possibly with fewer rounds, a change from their previous fight.
McGregor vs. Mayweather Rematch?
“There are conversations ongoing,” he added, “I fought Floyd at 153lbs, which is a low weight, so he brought me all the way down. It was over 12 rounds. I’d never fought 12 rounds. Now the discussion is at my weight, higher, heavy weight. 170lbs and maybe less rounds. So, I would fancy it.”
McGregor reflects on their previous encounter, believing he had Mayweather in a tough spot at times during their fight, “I had him bent over. You see me, I had him bent over. What more do you want me to do? Do you want me to finish the job while I have him bent over? I don’t need. I am so blessed by God. I don’t need nothing. I don’t need, I have, but I’d like a fight,” he said.
The idea of a rematch is generating interest beyond McGregor. Dave Feldman, the boss of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, expressed his enthusiasm for a potential fight between the two icons. He shared his thoughts with BloodyElbow.com, stating he would love to see McGregor face Mayweather in a bare-knuckle setting.
“Someone said to me, ‘What do you think about Manny Pacquiao fighting Floyd Mayweather again in boxing?’” Feldman recalled, “They were asking me for some help, and I said, ‘I’d love to see Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor in bare-knuckle because I think it’s a whole different fight, with the clinching that you can do and getting hit with the knuckles.’”
BKFC President Talks New Dynamic
Feldman believes a bare-knuckle fight would introduce a new dynamic. He noted, “We just think it’s a different world. So, it is a different sport—it’s different types of pain. It’s not necessarily that you’re getting hit and you’re getting flashes and concussed, but you get hit on the cheekbone and you’re like, ‘Oh, man, that hurt.’ So, it really just depends on who is able to withstand that kind of stuff.”
For now it remains speculation. If Conor McGregor is telling the truth, time will tell.
