Conor McGregor has claimed that only these three fighters would make any sense if he returns to the Octagon.
We are now over 2 and a half years since seeing McGregor enter the cage and are no closer to finding out a date, event or opponent for his next bout. The McGregor Michael Chandler saga has been ongoing since their UFC Ultimate fighter series ending back in August.
McGregor has taken jabs and pot shots at many people from different sports including, but not limited to; Jake Paul, KSI, Nate Diaz, Manny Pacquiao and many more. This week Conor has been on press tour for his new movie Roadhouse, which releases March 21 on Prime Video, and has stated that only three fighters are worth the return to MMA.
Conor McGregor Return: Names Three Opponents
Speaking to Adam Catterall via TalkSportMMA McGregor stated only Nate Diaz, Dustin Porier and Michael Chandler would make sense. The first being Diaz, a long term rival of McGregors and seeing a potential trilogy bout between the two has been questioned by fans, much to McGregors dislike.
“Obviously, I’ve also got the Diaz trilogy, that’s what I said for The Sphere but there was cold water put on that publicly off the bat, I wasn’t happy about that.”
The next Dustin Porier, who after the broken ankle in their last matchup still have beef to settle.
“It was good to see [Dustin] Poirier get that win at the weekend, that makes this the quadrilogy – we’ll say the ‘real trilogy’, [that would] really to finish it and put an end to it, that is a huge bout right now…I anticipated that the result would go that way and I was happy to see it, and that’s a great one for sure.”
And finally the man who’s been waiting and put his own career on pause for this fight Michael Chandler, who for obvious reasons deserves this fight.
“[Michael] Chandler, of course, I would assume that would be the first one.”
What’s Next?
McGregor is still hopeful, despite stagnant progress, of getting multiple bouts in 2024 but has also said that if progress isn’t moved soon he could lose interest in returning.
“I’ve got two fights left on my UFC contract and we’re still in the first quarter of 2024…I hope we get some clarity with the [return] date, and we can push towards it. I’m sure we’ll get something in by year’s end, that’s what I’m hoping…I need discussion or conversation because if I lose interest and I’m not getting anything back, I’ll just drift off.
He hopes to get a fight signed and nailed down after his press tour for Roadhouse. “I hope that I can get something in and get dialed in”.
