Islam Makhachev is coming off the biggest win of his career after ending his rivalry with Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. The current lightweight champion defeated the featherweight champion with a head kick, which ended the fight in the first round. There are many great contenders for the winner to take on next, but former light-heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier believes Makhachev should face Conor McGregor next.
The Unstoppable Islam Makhachev
Makhachev looks unstoppable at 155; the lightweight king has proven his dominance in his most recent fight. He is an incredibly well-balanced fighter who can finish standing up or on the ground. The champion is a nightmare for anybody, but many contenders are ready to take their shot. For example, Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira seem to be in prime positions, putting her opportunity. However, Cormier believes McGregor could fight for the title next.
Daniel Cormier On Why Conor McGregor Should Have A Title Shot
Speak in on his show with Ryan Clark, the UFC iconic explained his thoughts.
“I think Islam should fight Conor McGregor next,” Cormier said. “You have to listen… It’s built-in. It’s the biggest money fight the UFC could make. And why not? You have Islam Makhachev, who looks to be a guy who’s going to be a dominant champion. To have that dominant champion go to the next level of superstardom, you need a guy that can elevate him. The guy that can elevate him to that level is Conor McGregor.
“Look at what beating Conor McGregor did for Dustin Poirier. Look at what it did for Khabib Nurmagomedov. And we’re not even talking about all the other levels at which this makes sense,” Cormier continued. “You have Islam fighting Conor after the issues with Khabib. You have Islam fighting Conor, the biggest star in mixed martial arts, returning to the UFC… It makes sense!”
