Conor McGregor’s latest comments have sparked fresh speculation about his MMA future. The former dual-weight UFC champion hasn’t entered the Octagon since July 2021, following a serious leg injury in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Although McGregor has eagerly pushed for a comeback throughout 2024, it now appears his fighting days might be over.
Originally, McGregor was expected to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June. However, a training mishap—a broken pinky toe—delayed his return, with the Irish fighter opting to heal fully before stepping back into competition. Meanwhile, Chandler has since found another opponent in Charles Oliveira for UFC 309. This card, set for Madison Square Garden on November 16, will feature Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic as the headliners in a packed 12-fight lineup.
Conor McGregor Suggests MMA Retirement After Recent Social Media Hint
On Monday morning, McGregor posted a hint of retirement on social media. The message came after a fan urged him to consider walking away from the sport for good, especially after watching Khamzat Chimaev’s brutal submission victory over Robert Whittaker at UFC 308. Referring to McGregor’s numerous accomplishments and secure financial status, the fan tweeted:
“No reason to come back to UFC or fighting in general, you have a beautiful family, worth half a billion, businesses, as a successful businessman. You made your dreams come true, becoming UFC double champ. Don’t risk your health or well-being, you’ve got nothing to prove.”
Alongside the heartfelt plea, the fan included a graphic image of Whittaker’s injuries as a reminder of the physical toll the sport can take, writing, “Look at this below.”
In the days leading up to this retirement hint, McGregor also threw shade at featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, who had just secured a massive third-round knockout win against Max Holloway in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night. Known for his fiery presence on social media, McGregor didn’t hold back, even with $1 million lost on a recent bet. Just moments after Topuria’s victory, McGregor tweeted, “Call me,”

In a fiery response to a fan who predicted McGregor would KO Topuria, he added:
“Cave his head in handy.”
He followed this with:
“Good little fighter, too small for anything substantial IMO. He was getting chewed up there.”
Topuria didn’t stay silent. The Spanish fighter, who holds an undefeated 16-0 record, fired back when ESPN MMA questioned him about McGregor’s remarks. Without hesitation, he said:
“I don’t know what to say. F* him, I’m telling you, f* him.”
Topuria expressed his frustration with McGregor’s repeated comebacks and insults toward others in the sport:
“He fakes the comeback every time, he insults everyone in the UFC, he is like ‘I don’t care about anyone, ahh, I don’t respect anyone.’”
Not holding back, he added:
“Bro, you’re fing sick, you have some problems to fix in your fing mind. You need to take some classes on respect and how to treat people because you’re going to end up really really bad. When you follow these kinds of values in life you end up really bad.”
