If you blinked you may have missed it, but Conor McGregor took to his Instagram and has added to the mystery surrounding UFC 300, where many MMA fans and media have been left speculating what fight will headline the monumental event.
Conor left the caption that has many fight fans scratching their heads at what it means, saying, “UFC 300? Super Bowl announcement?”
If McGregor is added to UFC 300 it would be a huge name that the card was missing and could boost the ratings even more, as Conor McGregor has time and time again proven he is a big money draw for the UFC.
McGregor has been sidelined since 2021 after his third fight with Dustin Poirier, who was declared the winner via TKO when the ringside doctor determined that McGregor was unable to continue. McGregor was unfortunately diagnosed with a fractured tibia that required surgery to repair, leaving him on the shelf for quite some time.
Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler at International Fight Week on June 29?
Flash forward after a few years of recovery and McGregor looked to be ready for a return and used his social media platform to announce a fight date for a June 29, 2024 fight against Michael Chandler.
“Ladies and gentlemen, a Happy New Year to you all. I’d like to announce the return date for myself, the Notorious Conor McGregor, for the greatest comeback of all time will take place in Las Vegas for International Fight Week on June 29. The opponent, Michael Chandler. And the weight, Mr. Chandler? 185 pounds (laughs),” McGregor.
The delay for Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler has been a long time coming, since they both served as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter Season 31, so who knows if this will be the fight Conor speculated to be announced at UFC 300.
All we can do is speculate what is next in the Conor McGregor saga as he seems to be all over the place on when and who he will compete against. Conor has also hinted that he would like to cross over to boxing once again, this time against Manny Pacquiao.
The Challengers at UFC 300 for Conor McGregor
Nate Diaz: This trilogy fight between Nate Diaz is always an easy sell for the UFC. Who knows if the excitement level for Nate vs. Conor 3 has already expired in fight fan’s eyes, but it is still an option for UFC 300.
Michael Chandler: Sure the fight has been discussed to happen at International Fight Week on June 29th, but we could see the UFC using a platform like the Super Bowl and announcing it then to help the hype to get this fight signed and official.
Jorge Masvidal: Masvidal is an option as he is a fan favourite and could bring in some excitement if he and Conor are announced for UFC 300. Both have traded back and forth on social media, so it is not like this fight is unimaginable.
