The former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor has been out of action since his crippling leg injury suffered in his third bout with high flying Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July of 2021.
If the Irishman is to be believed, his delayed return to the octagon has absolutely nothing to do with him or his team, quite the opposite in fact. Coach Kavanagh appeared on The MMA Hour recently with his Alta business partner Rich Chou, when asked about the subject, here’s what he had to say.
“I won’t pretend to know the politics and what’s going on with legal stuff in the background,” Kavanaugh said. “All I know is it seems odd that we’re not getting [any news]. Like I said, I really am speaking from a position of ignorance because I actually try to purposefully avoid all of that.
“[McGregor’s manager] Audie [Attar] and the team, they do all that, they go back and forth with Hunter [Campbell] and the UFC team. But yeah, it’s weird to me for someone to be the star he is and not get more opportunities” (h/t MMA Fighting).
Conor McGregor and John Kavanagh Ready to Rock
Amazon Prime is set to release the highly anticipated remake of Roadhouse in a matter of days. McGregor will play ‘Knox’ while Jake Gylenhall is reprising the role of Dalton, made famous by Patrick Swayze.
“Look, I’m going to meet him either this evening or certainly tomorrow for the movie. Trust me, that’s why I half-jokingly say to journalists, ‘You know as much as me,’” Kavanagh said. “They all think, ‘Go on, give me the inside scoop.’ I’m seeing the same clips pop up that you guys do.
“Conor’s traveling so much and my head’s down so much with what’s happening day to day. I’m not really every day on to Conor, ‘Hey, what? I’ve seen an interview.’ He’ll come to me when the fight’s announced, but I will be asking him.”
Is UFC to Blame?
With the Irish cohort claiming they are ready to go, does the blame fall on Dana White? Well, he claims that it is the incredible success of Conor McGregor distracting him from his return. This is quite frankly, very easy to believe.
The unfortunate fact of the matter is we have conflicting reports from both parties involved. Here is what McGregor had to say on the matter when speaking to The Mac Life on his Roadhouse world tour
“I had a camp in Cannes, the South of France. I had a camp in Dubai where I had world champions training with me where I was hoping for a December date. Then a January date. Then it keeps getting pushed back, then I lose interest and stop full training for a while. Not stop training. I will always train, but stop full training and drinking a little back. I’m going to go back and regroup.”
Will we see Conor McGregor make the walk to the UFC Octagon before the year is out?
