Cory McKenna makes history. She now becomes the first woman in UFC to secure a Von Flue choke victory. Taking on Miranda Granger in a Strawweight bout, her fight took place as the second on the card.
A special performance for the 23-year-old she puts the rest of the 115 lbs division on notice. Young, hungry and only just getting started. This win is an important one for McKenna.
The Fight
Cory McKenna dominated the fight. Using her superior grappling, she was in complete control for the majority of the fight. Getting top control early, she was constantly looking for the finish or to advance position.
Landing strikes and threatening with submissions, she was looking like the total package. She almost had the fight finished in round one. Squeezing on a tight Arm Triangle choke. If there were a few more seconds on the clock she would have done it.
She didn’t waste time in the second though. When her opponent held her head to the ground and into side control. Cory was in the perfect position to set up the rare choke. Doing just that she had it tightly fixed in and got the tap two minutes into the second.
What’s Next?
Moving to 7-2 as a professional, she makes that two from three in the UFC. An important win in her career she has now cemented her place in the organisation. Extremely young the potential is clear for all to see. Constantly evolving next time out we’ll see improvements once again.
In a division not short of young contenders. McKenna marks herself as one to watch. With the Welsh Strawweight perhaps looking to become the nation’s newest hope for UFC gold. If she keeps producing finishes like this she’ll be sure to climb the rankings.
Up next could be almost anyone who is currently outside the top 15.
