Daiane Silva remains in hospital five weeks after she fell ill following a botched weight cut. This was when she was weight cutting for her fight against Eman Almudhaf on September 14th for Bellator London.
Daiane Silva Remains in a Coma
PFL Super fights women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg’s Curitiba-based MMA Promotion Nação Cyborg posted on social media last Saturday that Daiane Silva is currently hospitalised in England. This post has since been deleted however, Silva’s manager Alex Davis has confirmed Silva’s status to MMA Fighting. Officials from Bellator have not responded as of yet about Dainae’s condition despite multiple requests for comment.
The promotion flew one of Daiane’s friends from Brazil to be with her at the hospital and the person has updated Bellator officials daily on her recovery. It is being reported that Daiane Silva fell ill while she was dehydrating and she had to be hospitalised and put into an induced coma after suffering kidney failure. Currently, Daiane Silva is sedated and it is unclear what after-effects may have occurred once she has been cleared from the hospital.
Alex Davis released the following statement about Daiane Silva’s condition;
“As Daiane made weight for her debut in Bellator, she suffered an accident due to dehydration,”
“She was promptly seen by the doctor, was rushed to the hospital in delicate condition, was admitted to intensive care. Her condition was serious, but since, she has been improving steadily and our hope is that she recovers fully. Myself, her team, her doctor, the hospital doctors and Bellator have been working closely together in support with whatever is needed to help her recovery. We ask all to join us in our wishes and prayers that she recovers fully.”
Cris Cyborg Comments on Silva’s Condition After Title Victory
Cris Cyborg was able to get her hands on another title last Saturday when she defeated Larissa Pacheco. This was due to a unanimous decision to clinch the PFL Super fights Women’s featherweight title. After her fight Cris Cyborg commented briefly about the situation on her post-fight media scrum in Saudi Arabia. Cris Cyborg commented when she said;
“Really sad,”
“‘Leidy Dai’ had a tough cut. I know when you have a tough cut the responsible for you is your trainers, is your coach around you. I think you have to be cut safe and make an agreement with the event and I know they did, but the corner didn’t follow the rules. It’s really sad. I hope she recovers fast. I know she’s in bad situation but we pray for her and support her so she can come back home soon.”
Daiane Silva Predicted a Tough Weight Cut
Daiane Silva started her MMA career under Cris Cyborg’s Nação banner back in October 2021. This was when she earned a split decision victory over Carolina Kerr at 155 pounds. Silva would be able to follow this up with a pair of first-round stoppages against Mirela Vargas in 2023. Daiane Silva then agreed to face off against Almudhad on short notice. This was at featherweight, this was a weight she never made before in her professional career.
Speaking before the event, Daiane Silva did note that she expected a rough weight cut down to featherweight and even joked she would “jinx it” if she revealed how much she weighed when she was offered the fight. This was when Silva commented by saying;
“It will hurt. That’s all I can say,”
“I took this fight on 14 days’ notice, but I’m ready because I train four times a day here at CM [System] and we train hard every day. But as for the weight, I’m big and tall, and I have a high muscle mass percentage so it’s complicated for me, but this is the war. We’ll get there fine.”
