UFC President Dana White wasn’t pleased with Clay Guida following UFC Kansas City.
The UFC returned to Kansas City last night for their first fight night of Q2. The main event saw former featherweight champion Max Holloway edge a victory over surging British contender Arnold Allen in an epic technical striking battle. With highlight finishes throughout the rest of the card, many fans on Twitter described it as the best fight night of 2023 so far. However, the UFC is never without a few controversial moments.
Opening the main card was UFC veteran Clay Guida who competed in his 61st MMA fight against Rafa Garcia. The fight turned into a one-sided beating, with Guida on the receiving end of it. After the bout, “The Carpenter” removed his gloves and waited around for Daniel Cormier to finish interviewing Garcia.
It looked like the 41-year-old was calling it a day, so DC did the honourable thing and gave him his moment on the mic. However, Guida instead asked to trade gloves with his opponent and went on to send a Happy Birthday message to his mother in the crowd.
“I tricked you guys,” Guida told the Kansas City crowd. “There ain’t no way I’m walking away yet.”
Dana White Reacts to Clay Guida Faking His Retirement
Dana White, as usual, had some things to say about Guida’s octagon foolery.
“That pissed me off, actually, to be honest with you,” White said. “No, that pissed me off. “I like [Clay Guida], he’s a nice guy, but you’re faking your retirement, so you can say f**king happy birthday to somebody? We’re running a live event here, you know what I mean? I was not happy about that…That was not good.”
Dana White’s sour reaction will likely stop other fighters from trying to pull off anything similar in the future. But I doubt Guida could care less about upsetting the boss at this stage in his career. He wanted to give his mother that moment, and after 17 years in the promotion, why not take advantage of it?
