Dana White: Michael Chandler Has Certain Future Says Dana White
Dana White says Michael Chandler has a future with the UFC. Chandler had his first fight in 2 years in a rematch against Charles Olivera. Although, he put up a spirited effort Chandler was essentially dominated for the entirety of the fight. Olivera had a great performance outclassing Chandler on the feet and hurting him multiple times and dominated Chandler on the ground. Chandler’s only real success came in the 5th round where he momentarily had Olivera hurt. Chandler also memorably jumped on his back several times while Olivera was on it in towards the end of the round.
The Future Of Chandler
With this loss Michael Chandler’s future has been called into question. Chandler was thoroughly beaten by Olivera and he’s only getting older currently being 38. His style relies heavily on explosiveness and athleticism something that fades with age. However, Chandler looked as athletic and explosive as ever merely being outclassed by the better fighter. There’s also no shame in losing to Olivera an all time great being one of the best lightweights to ever do it. Chandler remains an entertainer even in defeat and as long as Chandler remains exciting he will continue to get big fights.
A similar sentiment was echoed by UFC boss Dana White who has nothing but praise for Chandler. In the post fight press conference Mr White spoke on Chandler.
White said, “He’s like an Arturo Gatti. He’s one of those – win, lose or draw, you’re never bummed out at the end of a Michael Chandler fight. … He’s always exciting, he’s always fun. The last round of that fight, he kept getting taken down. He got on his back. So when he got on his back at the end, he just stood up and started slamming him.” An apt comparison regardless of your opinion on him Chandler is always a fun watch.
White continued saying, “The kid always tries to win. He always comes to fight and Michael Chandler’s always going to have a home here. Until he decides to retire, Michael Chandler isn’t going anywhere.” Here we get the happy news that Chandler will continue to have a home in the UFC for a long time. And given his style there will always be fun match ups for Chandler. Regardless of the loss Michael Chandler will remain must watch T.V.
