A big part of being a sportsperson is representing your country, whether that is as a fighter, football player, or runner. Most athletes are love representing their country. There must be something about holding the national flag above your head and putting your country on the map in a particular sport.
That’s why it became a massive shock when the UFC banned their fighters from having flags. However, it seems like this ban is over, as was confirmed by Dana White in a recent Contender Series press conference.
The Flag Ban
The UFC has numerous fighters from different nations who love to represent their countries. For some nations, only a handful of athletes represent the country. It came as a shock to many when the MMA juggernaut decided to ban flags from their shows. The ban happened in 2022, yet it seems to be over now.
Dana White On Bringing Them Back
White explained why they are letting flags back at a press conference.
“Flags are back,” White told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “I was on vacation during the Mexican Independence Day, and the no flag thing drove me crazy. So I was like, ‘Yeah, f*ck that. We’re bringing flags back.’ It drove me crazy.”
“There’s a lot of things that go on in a company this big,” White said. “You can’t micromanage everything. Sometimes, things are done for the intentions of the right reasons. Everybody in this room knows the way that I feel about a lot of things. ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ is the answer to most things.
“Everybody’s too soft, and everybody’s too sensitive about everything. When the decision was made to do this, I was just like, ‘Eh, what’s the big deal if they don’t have flags?’ Mexican Independence Day flipped the switch, and I said, ‘That’s enough of the no flags thing.’ Flags are back. If any flags hurt your feelings, too f*cking bad.”
