Fans have been eagerly awaiting Conor McGregor’s return to the octagon, and speculation is now swirling around a potential fight with Dan Hooker. While UFC CEO Dana White hasn’t confirmed the matchup, he recently expressed his enthusiasm for the idea, calling it a “great fight.”
McGregor, a former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion, has been out of action for more than three years. His absence followed a devastating injury in July 2021, where he suffered a broken tibia and fibula during a fight against Dustin Poirier. The injury occurred in the first round and resulted in a doctor’s stoppage, giving Poirier the TKO victory.
Many expected McGregor to return at UFC 303, during International Fight Week, in a welterweight bout against Michael Chandler. However, the Irish superstar pulled out of that fight, citing a fractured toe just weeks before the event.
Over the weekend, McGregor added fuel to the rumours about his comeback. Speaking to fans, he hinted at a potential fight against Dan Hooker in February, possibly in Saudi Arabia. This would mark McGregor’s first fight since the Poirier injury, and his first appearance in the Middle East.
Dana White On Board With Conor McGregor vs. Dan Hooker
Hooker, a standout from City Kickboxing, has been vocal about the potential matchup. He suggested that the fight should take place either in January or March, as he and his partner are expecting the birth of their second child early next year.
Despite all the buzz, Dana White has been cautious not to confirm anything just yet. Speaking after a recent Contender Series event, White addressed the situation.
“Yeah, obviously, you know, that would be a great fight,” White said. “I like that fight — I did not announce the fight.”
Hooker has been riding high recently, securing three consecutive victories in the lightweight division. His latest win came in August at UFC 305, where he earned a hard-fought split decision over Mateusz Gamrot, a top Polish contender. That victory solidified Hooker’s spot back in the lightweight top five. Before that, he also claimed a TKO win against Claudio Puelles and a decision victory over Jalin Turner.
Will it Come to Fruition?
If McGregor does end up facing Hooker, it would be a significant test for both fighters. For McGregor, it’s a chance to prove he can still compete at the highest level after his injury layoff. Meanwhile, Hooker would be looking to capitalize on his current momentum and take down one of the sport’s most famous names.
There’s no doubt that a fight between McGregor and Hooker would draw massive attention. Both fighters are known for their striking abilities and willingness to engage in exciting battles. McGregor’s precision and knockout power are legendary, while Hooker’s toughness and durability have earned him respect throughout the MMA world.
For now, fans will have to wait and see if this matchup becomes a reality. With McGregor hinting at a return in early 2024 and Hooker already preparing for his next fight, the stage could be set for an explosive showdown. However, as Dana White made clear, nothing is official yet.
