UFC President Dana White shared his thoughts on UFC 279 after a stressful fight week for the boss.
Khamzat Chimeav and Nate Diaz were supposed to square off in the main event of UFC 279, but weight complications on Khamzat’s end caused a change of match ups for both fighters. Khamzat would be matched with Kevin Holland, and Nate was matched with Tony Ferguson. Despite the two not meeting in the octagon, they both had impressive performances last night. UFC president Dana White shares his thoughts on UFC 279.
Main Event Result
Diaz submitted UFC veteran Tony Ferguson via guillotine choke in the fourth round. This was the last fight on his UFC contract. He stated in a post-fight interview that he looks to embark on different areas of combat sports and dominate. He hinted that a UFC return is possible after he is finished making a statement outside the organisation. If this is true, UFC president Dana White would be more than open to bringing back the PPV star.
Chimeav fought Holland in a catchweight bout of 180lbs. This was after he missed the welterweight limit of 170lbs. He went on to dominate Holland, getting a first-round D’arce choke, finishing the fight early.
Dana White Speaks on Nate Diaz Leaving the UFC
In the post-fight media scrum, Dana said the following: “No matter what Nate does from here on out, this is his house,” White said at the post-fight press conference. “He’s been here forever. It’s been a blast having him here. I wish him well. He and I had this discussion months ago at the offices. Whatever he moves on to do, I wish him nothing but the best. If he’s starting his own organization or getting into promoting or doing something else, I wish him nothing but the best of luck. It’s been awesome having him here.”
Dana Gives His Thoughts on the Co-main and Main Event
Diaz vs Ferguson was an interesting fight, to say the least. However, Dana believes that the fight delivered as any main event should. He said, “They’re both older guys that have been around here for a long time. It’s what I expected”.
Dana shared his thoughts on Chimeav’s performance. He said, “ I don’t know if anybody expected him to do exactly what he did”. “You don’t know what to expect from that guy. This is like his fourth fight, where he hasn’t even taken a punch. He’s an absolute freak of nature. I don’t think anybody expected that, especially against Kevin.”
Dana also acknowledged Khamzat’s inability to make weight and said it was a problem that they would figure out. He finished by saying that he is more than open to Khamzat fighting at middleweight.
